Training Evaluation
These competencies have been adapted with permission from The Institute for Performance and Learning’s Competencies for Training and Development Professionals© as the model and reference standard of practice for workplace learning and development professionals.
EVALUATE is the final step of the process. Together, we will develop a program of evaluation that will not only deal with the immediate outcome of the learning but will also provide post-learning performance. As with the Design, we want to determine the change in performance based on our assessment of the performance gaps prior to learning and the performance changes as a result of the learning.
1. Prepare to Facilitate
Logistics arranged (venue, material, equipment)
- Contingency plans prepared (e.g., loss or unavailability of Internet, equipment failure, environmental problems)
- Learners, their supervisors and coaches advised of pre-requisites and pre-work assignments (if any)
2. Create Learning Environment
Prepare to welcome learners as they enter learning environment, including virtual environment
- Look for ways to identify learners so that the facilitator can respond using their names (name tags, desk tent cards)
3. Engage Learners
GENERAL
Use a variety of instructional techniques to foster learning
- Maintain a balance between providing content and allowing learners to practice
- Use appropriate language, anecdotes and examples to facilitate learning
- Ensure the delivery is paced to meet the learners' needs
- Use bridges and transitions to orient learners and maintain continuity
- Ask questions to facilitate discussion and validate understanding
- Encourage questions and comments from the learners
- Draw upon the experiences of learners as well as their knowledge and skills to enhance the learning experience
- Encourage all the learners to participate actively
- When learners ask questions, paraphrase the questions to ensure clarity and understanding before responding
- Attempt to adapt the content or delivery in response to learners' questions
IN THE CLASSROOM
Ensure that you, your equipment, and visual aids are positioned to enhance the learning experience
- Use media to enhance learning
FOR DISTANCE LEARNING (e.g., e-learning, virtual classrooms, webinars)
- Demonstrate technical skills by using chat spaces, polling, whiteboards, breakout sessions
- Optimize virtual classroom tools (e.g., message boards, live channel feedback) to solicit input, enhance learning, and encourage collaboration
4. Foster Learning
Demonstrate your understanding of the organization and the relevant job performance for which learning is occurring
Present information and concepts clearly
Use relevant facts, examples, and analogies to respond to questions and to illustrate concepts
Assess Learning
- Ensure that each learning objective is met before moving on
- Provide additional opportunities for learning and practice to take place
